Best Video Editing Software for Beginners and Students

A beginner-first way to choose editing software based on device, goals, learning curve and project needs.

01

The best first editor is the one you can practise

Beginners often spend too long comparing software and too little time finishing videos. Your first tool should run reliably on your computer, support the footage you use and let you practise cutting, sound, titles, colour and export. The goal is to learn editing decisions. Most of those ideas can later move with you to another application.

Think about your likely work. Short social videos, interviews, weddings, lessons and films have different media and delivery needs. Also check whether a college, studio or future client uses a particular format.

02

Premiere Pro for a broad editing path

Premiere Pro is used for many types of online, agency and production work. A learner can organise footage, edit multi-track sequences, work with captions, mix audio and send selected shots to other Adobe applications. Its broad use makes it relevant for students who want to work with different client formats.

It is a paid application, so check current pricing and device requirements on Adobe's official site. Training should focus on the timeline and workflow rather than trying to cover every menu.

03

DaVinci Resolve for editing and colour

DaVinci Resolve provides editing, colour, audio and effects areas inside one application. A free version is available, though features and hardware needs can change. It is a strong choice for learners who want to study colour along with the main edit.

The number of pages can look difficult at first. Begin with media organisation, basic cuts and exports. Move to audio and colour after you can finish a simple sequence without getting lost in technical settings.

04

Final Cut Pro and simpler editors

Final Cut Pro is built for Apple systems and uses a different timeline approach from many other editors. It can suit people who already work in that device setup. Simpler applications may be useful for a first school or social project, but check whether they support the control and file exchange needed for your longer-term plans.

A simple tool is not automatically a poor choice. If it helps you learn clean cuts and complete work, it has served a purpose. Move when the project asks for more control, not because another interface looks more professional.

05

Add motion, sound and graphics when needed

After Effects supports motion graphics and compositing, but it is not a replacement for learning the main editing timeline. Audition or Fairlight may be used for more detailed sound work. Photoshop can support thumbnails and still graphics. These tools should enter the workflow one at a time as project needs grow.

Students should learn safe media sources and licences. Music, footage, fonts and images found online are not automatically free to use. This matters in public portfolios and paid client work.

06

Use projects to decide what to learn next

Complete a short interview, a one-minute story and several vertical clips. Track what slows you down: poor audio, weak pacing, slow graphics or confusing file organisation. That list gives you a better learning plan than collecting random tutorials.
