One course can lead to different roles

Animation is a production process with many parts. Some students enjoy drawing poses, while others prefer 3D objects, character performance, motion graphics or shot finishing. The right role is not decided by the course name alone. It comes from the tasks a student practises, the quality of their work and the type of team they want to join.

A broad course can introduce several stages. Students can then build deeper skill and a focused showreel in the area that fits them. Entry requirements and depth vary by program, so the written syllabus should be checked before admission.

02

2D animator and storyboard artist

A 2D animator creates movement through drawings, digital rigs or layered artwork. The role calls for timing, poses, expressions and clean scene work. Storyboard artists plan the shots before animation begins. They translate a script into clear visual panels that communicate framing, action and continuity.

Drawing helps in both roles, but finished illustration is not the only skill. Story clarity, observation and the ability to revise from feedback are equally important. A portfolio should show sequences, not only single character images.

03

3D modeller, rigger and animator

A modeller builds characters, props or environments. A rigger creates the controls used to pose and move a model. A 3D animator works with those controls to create body mechanics, acting and action. Lighting and rendering roles then help form the final image.

Students do not need to master every 3D department at once. A general foundation helps them understand the pipeline, after which a role-focused reel can show stronger ability. Technical discipline matters because files pass from one department to another.

04

Motion designer, compositor and VFX artist

Motion designers animate type, logos, illustrations, icons and data for advertising, explainers, titles and social content. Compositors join visual layers, live footage and effects into a finished shot. VFX work may include tracking, keying, cleanup, simulation or other tasks, depending on the role and studio.

These paths can overlap, but they are not identical. Students interested in effects-heavy work should compare a dedicated VFX course with an animation course. Those interested in brand communication may prefer motion graphics projects.

05

Related paths in editing, games and learning

Animation training may also support work in video editing, game art, previsualisation and learning content, but additional skills can be needed. An editor needs strong timeline and sound control. A game artist must understand real-time limits. Learning content needs clear explanation and attention to the age or background of the viewer.

Freelance work is possible in several paths. It also requires scoping, client communication, contracts, payment management and reliable delivery. Students should not assume freelancing produces immediate or fixed income.

06

Prepare a role-focused showreel

Select the role first, then choose work that supports it. A modeller's reel should not hide strong models behind a long general montage. An animator should show acting, weight and movement. A compositor can use breakdowns to show the original layers and final shot. State your part in team work.

TGC East Delhi runs animation training from 1st Floor, E-359, Vikas Marg, Nirman Vihar, Delhi 110092. Ask the counselling team about course eligibility, current software, project work, duration, fee, showreel guidance and placement assistance. No role or salary can be assured; results depend on the student's work, role fit and hiring demand.

  • List the production tasks you enjoy most.
  • Compare role-specific course depth.
  • Build a reel for one clear job family.
  • Show process and state your exact role.
  • Research current job descriptions before applying.
