Animation training starts with movement

Animation creates the impression of life by changing images over time. Before a student works on a long scene, they should understand timing, spacing, weight, anticipation, follow-through and arcs. Simple exercises such as a bouncing ball or swinging object can show whether movement feels light, heavy, fast or slow.

These principles apply across drawn, cut-out and 3D animation. Software can place keyframes, but the animator decides why a character moves and how the action communicates emotion or intent.

02

Pre-production gives the scene a plan

An animation normally begins with an idea, script or brief. Students may learn visual research, character sheets, thumbnails, storyboards, shot planning and animatics. An animatic places storyboard frames on a timeline so the team can test pace, camera changes and sound before spending time on finished shots.

Good planning does not remove creativity. It gives the animator a clear problem to solve and helps prevent wasted work later. Even a ten-second piece benefits from a stated audience, mood and delivery format.

03

2D and motion graphics build timing skills

A 2D module may cover drawing for movement, poses, clean-up, digital rigs, lip sync and scene assembly, depending on the program. Motion graphics applies animation to type, shapes, logos, charts and other designed elements. It is often used in advertising, social content, title sequences and explainers.

Students should check the current syllabus because tools and depth vary. The main aim is not to collect effects but to control timing, visual order and change in a way that supports the message.

04

3D animation follows a production pipeline

A 3D course may introduce modelling, UV work, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, camera and rendering. These are separate roles in larger studios, while a generalist may work across several steps. Students learn how one stage affects the next: poor topology can make rigging difficult, and weak lighting can hide good models.

Character animation requires pose, balance, body mechanics and acting choices. Technical steps matter, but the final shot is judged by how clearly the action reads. Regular playblasts and trainer feedback help students improve before a final render.

05

Compositing, sound and editing finish the work

Compositing combines rendered layers, effects and live-action footage into a finished shot. Students may practise masks, tracking, keying, colour matching and simple effects. Editing places shots in order and controls the final rhythm, while sound adds dialogue, atmosphere and impact.

The exact amount of VFX and editing depends on the animation program. Learners who want a deeper specialisation should compare the dedicated Animation, VFX and Video Editing courses instead of assuming one course covers every field in equal detail.

06

Projects become a showreel

A showreel should contain the student's strongest relevant shots and clearly state their role. Process images, breakdowns and short notes can show modelling, rigging or compositing work that is not obvious in the final clip. Permission is needed before sharing studio or group work.

TGC East Delhi's animation training is based at 1st Floor, E-359, Vikas Marg, Nirman Vihar, Delhi 110092. Ask about eligibility, course depth, current software, projects, duration, fee and showreel guidance. Course content differs by program, so review the written syllabus before admission. Students can also ask to see suitable project samples and understand how class feedback is provided.

  • Learn timing and spacing through simple exercises.
  • Plan scenes with storyboards and animatics.
  • Understand how each production stage connects.
  • Use feedback before spending time on final renders.
  • Show only your strongest work and state your role.
