Motion and screen course comparison

Animation vs VFX: What Is the Difference?

Animation creates movement, performance and animated worlds. VFX builds or combines screen elements so shots can show things that were difficult, unsafe or impossible to film directly.

03

Animation Builds Movement

Animation work asks how an object or character moves through time. Students may work with drawing, 2D assets, 3D models or rigs according to the selected program.

04

VFX Builds the Final Shot

VFX work often starts with recorded footage and adds, removes or combines elements. Clean edges, tracking, colour, light and believable integration matter.

05

Choose by the Work You Want to Make

A student drawn to performance, posing and animated worlds may prefer Animation. A student drawn to film shots, compositing and effects may prefer VFX.

  • Ask to see course-specific student work
  • Check whether the program is 2D, 3D or mixed
  • Review the current software list
  • Compare project and showreel expectations
06

Why the Fields Often Work Together

Film, games, advertising and online content can use both animation and VFX. That does not make the courses identical; each route needs its own foundations and practice.
